About The Group

London offers a wide variety of streets, lanes, alleys, squares, parks and gardens to explore and so we can gain an interesting and deeper appreciation of our cultural and historical heritage. A walk is organised about six or seven times a year, but particularly avoiding Winter months and during the Summer when most people are unavailable. A Power Point review of the years’ walks is often made, in the winter months, at a suitable venue.

The day begins with catching the first ‘off-peak’ train at around 9.15 a.m. (if starting at Aylesbury Vale Parkway, but you can join at other stations), arriving at Marylebone station at about 10.30 a.m. In London we take a variety of transport options to arrive at our place or region of interest, including train, underground, bus and walking. Normally the walk lasts about two hours in the morning and is taken at a steady pace with a break for lunch. Depending on the particular walk the travel back to Marylebone Station is shorter, arriving for a train around 4 p.m. Sometimes a ‘mini-visit’ is included for a particular place of interest.

If you are interested in joining the group you are asked to email the group leader (blue link above) requesting to be put on the group list. The group leader will then add you to the group list, so that you can receive detailed information about each walk. You are then asked to reply by email to the group leader if you intend to join the particular walk. It is important to know the exact numbers on the walk especially if a lunch venue is to be booked. For safety and comfort considerations, the group size is limited to twenty.

Before the actual walk the group leaders and an assistant make a recce (reconnaissance) of the route to check its suitability and to find a place for lunch. They also provide a leaflet giving details of the walk. A small charge is made to cover the travel and leaflet production costs; this is currently £5. By using a Travelcard we are able to roam over the whole of London and the suburbs. However, there are other to pay for travel in London, including using your ‘bus pass’ or debit, credit or Oyster cards. The choice is yours, but advice can be given.
